One rescued victim recalled that even siblings were separated and taken to different facilities, where they were forced to repeatedly sing songs of praise for Russia. Russian troops have abducted more than 16,000 Ukrainian children, according to the Ukrainian government. Then, let me ask him this: Which country is kidnapping children from Russian-occupied land, just as the Germans did to children in Nazi-occupied countries? He insisted that Europe and the United States were spewing hatred around the world and blamed them for “apparently forgetting what Nazi Germany’s ambitions had caused.” I heard Russian President Vladimir Putin’s speech at the May 9 Victory Day celebrations. A puzzle game that feels like a small, precious gem. Together with its meticulously detailed hand-drawn illustrations, it feels like every single detail of Gorogoa is well-thought-out and precise, probably because it took solo developer Jason Roberts six years to make. Winner of Debut Game at the 2018 BAFTA Games Awards, as well as Best Mobile Game and the Innovation Award at the GDC 2018 Choice Awards. It's straightforward, short (the game is a neat 2-hours long), and goes in interesting directions. Gorogoa is an elegant evolution of the puzzle genre, told through a beautifully hand-drawn story designed and illustrated by Jason Roberts. Its dialogue-less story about a young boy traversing the world where time goes hand-in-hand with the gameplay. It’s a simple but refined puzzle mechanic and the game keeps surprising you with new and interesting ways in which you can manipulate the panels. Using these techniques, you need to help a young boy on his journey and by moving panels you help him move throughout the world - like creating a pathway of stepping stones. You can also put each of the panels on top of each other, creating new scenes and connections, or in some cases move the panels around to reveal secrets - like discovering the wandering eye of a giant beast. ![]() Watching the line of marbles glide along the ramps you designed and then magically make all the stars disappear was the greatest feeling! Imagination and creativity are just as important as mathematical reasoning for engineering a ramp system that allows the marbles to pass through the stars. The solution also had to be sound from both a mathematics and physics standpoint. There are infinite ways of solving each puzzle, but solving the problem required the use of critical thinking skills. Failed designs provided prime opportunities for learning because the feedback was immediate. It allowed students a safe place to take intellectual risks. It provided just the right amount of frustration, enough to test (and hopefully build) perseverance skills. Here are my observations of what Marbleslides did for students: ![]() It was truly a puzzle, a problem that kids were challenged to solve in unique ways, using what they knew (and also what they didn’t know). ![]() It was not a drill and kill worksheet disguised as a video game in order to entice kids to buy in. It was not a direct instruction video, not a flipped classroom lesson. The palpable pride and joy when the class applauded and congratulated students for their brilliant work of engineering.Īfter a day of this Desmos activity, I was unequivocally sold on its positive impact on student learning. Curious looks from a student when the teacher unexpectedly projected the student’s solution on the class screen for everybody to see. Squeals of delight and ecstasy upon finding a solution. Moans of agony of from getting soooo close. Not for the entire class period.Īs I looked around the room throughout the period, here’s what I observed:įurrowed brows. A room full of 8th graders and not a peep out of a single one of them. The first thing to hit me was the deafening silence. So, what happened when I passed out the Chromebooks and provided students with the code to start Marbleslides? In writing these equations, students learn a ton (whether they know it or not) about the properties of linear equations. In each progressive puzzle, the stars are placed in different and more challenging locations so students have to design more and more elaborate series of ramps in order to get the marble through all the stars. Students create ramps by writing linear equations. The basic premise of Marbleslides is this: The goal is to get marbles to pass through four stars by creating a series of ramps for the marbles to slide on. After we teachers tried the activity for ourselves, we decided to let our classes further explore linear equations by doing Marbleslides. ![]() Our class just finished an introductory unit on graphing linear equations. I must admit that I was initially skeptical when a colleague introduced me to a Desmos activity called Marbleslides. On the Desmos platform, teachers have the ability to create and share graphing-based activities and lessons. Desmos started as a free online graphing calculator (farewell, TI-89!), but has since evolved into a powerful tool for student exploration and learning. ![]() ![]() ![]() However, the only way I could get rid of my PCI Serial Port issue in Device Manager was to install an older driver I obtained on Dell's Web site. In my case Windows 10 installed a chipset driver. What's most important is that you get the driver from your PC or motherboard manufacturer's Web site, not from Intel or other chipset maker or other Web site that provides driver downloads. DON'T click on any of the links that go to third-party driver sites like or. In the search results you should find information that indicates if it's the motherboard chipset or some other hardware. Then paste this string into a Google search field which should looks something like this: Highlight (by dragging your mouse over) the long string of text that starts with VEN (but don't include the "requires further installation" text), right-click on it and select Copy from the pop-up menu. Right before that string in the Information field is what you're looking for. Click on one of these events and in the Information field you'll see the failure indicated by the "requires further installation" string. Right-click on the entry with the exclamation point and select Properties and then click on the Events tab and you'll see "events" where the system unsuccessfully attempted to load a driver. 99% of the time it's an issue with a missing or, in my case, improper driver. If you do have a device issue (an entry with a yellow exclamation point icon), particularly under the "Ports" or "Universal Serial Bus controllers" headings, you need to get it taken care of. If you have a clean Device Manager go down to the Second Things Second section below. The first time I looked at mine there was a PCI Serial Port entry with a yellow exclamation point icon underneath the Ports heading. Here's screen shot of a clean Device Manager window: Click on Device Manager on the left pane and your device headings will appear in the right pane. To pull up Device Manager your right-click on the This PC in File Explorer and select Manage from the pop-up menu. You do this by checking Device Manager to make sure there are no errors. The first thing you want to check is to make sure your PCI bus (which includes your USB ports) driver is up to snuff. This in fact was the reason my SLP printer wouldn't print a complete label. The default Windows 10 Intel chipset driver caused, what I thought was, a minor problem with my PCI bus. I thought I'd share this information because I couldn't find it anywhere in any of my internet searches.Īs I stated, one problem had nothing to do with Seiko hardware or software. I spent countless hours playing around with the Smart Label software application but one of my problems ended up not having anything to do with the printer or the software but was an issue with my PC. At times this behavior was intermittent where I might get one label to print OK and at other times no labels would print at all. In my case, the label would start to print but then stop and I'd have to manually flush the queue. If you have an older model 100 or 200 Smart Label Printer by Seiko you may run into problems when you try to get them to work on Windows 10. (A real, honest review with no affiliate links.)
